Frequently Asked Questions
Therapy is an investment of time, energy, and money. I try to make the practical side of starting therapy as clear as possible so you know what to expect before we begin.
What are your fees?
1
My current rate is $150 for individual sessions and $180 for family sessions. You are welcome to pay by credit card or use a Health Savings Account.
I am a private-pay clinician and do not bill insurance directly.
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Because reimbursement varies by plan, I recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask about your out-of-network benefits before beginning therapy.
Do you accept insurance?
2
I do not participate directly with insurance networks.
Sessions are paid for privately at the time of service. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide documentation for you to submit to your insurance company.
Your insurance company determines whether services are eligible for reimbursement and how much they will reimburse.
What should I ask my insurance company about out-of-network coverage?
3
You may want to ask:
* Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health services?
* Do I have an out-of-network deductible?
* How much of that deductible has already been met?
* What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed after the deductible is met?
* Is there a maximum amount you reimburse per session?
* Do I need preauthorization or a referral?
* How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?
What is a superbill?
4
A superbill is a document that includes information about your sessions that an insurance company may require when considering an out-of-network reimbursement claim.
I can provide superbills when requested. Receiving a superbill does not guarantee that your insurance company will reimburse you.
How long are sessions?
5
Individual therapy sessions are typically about 50 minutes. Family sessions may vary depending on the needs of the work and what we agree on in advance.
Do you offer a consultation?
6
Yes. I offer a free 15-minute consultation before scheduling an initial appointment.
The consultation gives us a chance to briefly discuss what is bringing you to therapy, answer practical questions, and determine whether working together seems like a good fit.
Do you offer in-person and virtual therapy?
7
Yes. I offer both in-person therapy in the Atlanta area and telehealth for clients located in Georgia.
We can discuss which format makes the most sense for you.
How often will we meet?
8
Most clients begin with weekly sessions.
Meeting consistently gives us enough continuity to understand what is happening and build momentum in the work. Depending on your needs, goals, and progress, we can discuss whether a different frequency makes sense.
What happens during the first session?
9
The first session is an opportunity for us to get a fuller picture of what is bringing you in.
We may talk about what has been difficult recently, relevant history, relationships, previous therapy experiences, and what you hope will be different as a result of therapy.
You do not need to prepare a perfect explanation beforehand. We can figure out where to begin together.
What is your cancellation policy?
10
Because your appointment time is reserved specifically for you, I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule.
Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged the full session fee, except when otherwise required or appropriate.
Is therapy confidential?
11
Yes. What you share in therapy is confidential.
There are certain legal and ethical exceptions to confidentiality, including situations involving immediate safety concerns, suspected abuse or neglect, or when disclosure is otherwise required by law.
We will review confidentiality and its limits as part of the informed consent process before beginning therapy.
Do you work with teens?
12
Yes. I work with both teens and adults.
When working with adolescents, I try to balance the teen’s need for privacy with appropriate communication and involvement from parents or caregivers.
We will discuss expectations around confidentiality and family involvement at the beginning of treatment.
Do you work with couples and families?
13
Yes. I provide couples and family therapy in addition to individual therapy in conjunction with teen therapy. When seeing an adult as the primary client, I do not see couples and families.
Because relationship and family work is structured differently from individual therapy, we can discuss your goals and determine whether this format is the right fit before scheduling.
What if I’m not sure whether therapy is right for me?
14
You do not need to make a long-term commitment before having a conversation.
A consultation is a chance to ask questions, get a sense of how I work, and decide whether you would like to schedule a first session.
That being said, I have often heard clients say their struggle isn’t serious enough for therapy. There isn’t a certain struggle or severity that rules out therapy. There is always room for support and you can feel it out as we go.
Looking to Book a Session?
You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. If you are looking for a space to better understand yourself, work through what has been difficult, and create meaningful change, we can begin there.
